Tynwald Day 1999

Tynwald Day is the annual open air parliament in the Isle of Man.
Dating from the 9th century it was introduced by the Norse rulers of the Isle of Man and the Western Isles
of Scotland. In ancient times it was the day of the year when the old laws were recited and
new laws introduced.

Today, Tynwald sits in comfort in Douglas and new laws are introduced throughout the year, but
the open air ceremony is still enacted on the 5th July each year when a
large proportion of the population attend St Johns for the occasion.

Here is a selection of pictures from Tynwald Day 1999.
